What's this about?

'Chattory' provides a simple and easy-to-use service to connect people. New chatrooms can be created in a very quick way and the best of all: it is free. You don't even have to register for using Chattory.
This service is intended to connect you and your friends or colleagues instantly by just browsing to this website. Your own chatroom is created automatically and you can invite people by distributing the chatroom ID or by sending the generated URL to your friends. Anytime, you're free to create a new chatroom by clicking on the 'Create New Chat' button at the top left corner. You can join an existing chat as well by typing the appropriate chat ID in the 'Join Chat' dialog.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I create a new chat?

Just browse to this website. If you have been in a chatroom recently, you may be assigned to this chatroom again. In this case, simply click on 'Create New Chat' (button in the top left corner).

How can I change my username?

If you are entering a new chat, a box providing a textfield for your new username appears. This box only shows up once in each chatroom. By clicking on your username (at the left of the message input field) you can change your username as well at any time.

Where is the box providing a text field which allows me to change my username?

This box appears only once if you create or join a new chatroom (see above how to change your username).

Can everyone join my chatroom?

Yes! Be aware, that everyone who has your chat ID can enter your chatroom! The idea of this website is to create public chatrooms which are accessible very easily. Therefore everyone is able to join the chatroom in theory. But don't forget that it should be very hard to guess your randomly generated chat ID :-)

What happens to my chatroom if it is not used any more for longer than 1 day?

Currently Chattory keeps all chatrooms in storage for at least 1 day. Be aware that all data related to a chatroom probably will be deleted permanently if the last message of this chatroom was sent at least 24 hours ago. However, you can make your chat permanent in the options dialog.

What are permanent/temporary chatrooms?

By default, a new chatroom is temporary. This means, inactive chatrooms may be deleted irreversibly! If you want to protect your chatroom from being deleted, use the options dialog to mark the chat as permanent.

Why does Chattory say my username is already occupied?

Every username can only be used once per chatroom. If someone else is already using this name, you cannot use it in this specific chat. Keep in mind that a user still occupies a name after leaving a chatroom. As a result, a username is related to your computer. Hence, if you enter the same chatroom using another computer, you cannot use the same username again.

Ahh! These ugly status messages are annoying!

You can hide all status messages by disabling the 'Show Status Messages' Option in the 'Options' dialog.

Line breaks within one message

Pressing enter while typing a message triggers the send button. Hold the 'shift' key while pressing enter inserts a new line into your current message!

Highlight messages

Use the HTML-bold-tag (or italic-tag) to highlight your message. Example: '<b>Important!</b> Do not forget your <i>bag</i>!' ('Important! Do not forget your bag !')
